  • Across the Interstate 35

Across the Interstate 35 deals with the gentrification of a district that has existed as a ghetto in East Austin for decades, and the consequences for its inhabitants. East Austin is separated by the Highway I35 from Downtown. The Afro-American population has been inhabiting East Austin since the 1960s. As a result of the economy in the IT industry, Austin is experiencing an economic upswing and is becoming an attractive city center for other industries, attracting new companies and workforce. Due to the gentrification of the district, both the prices of the land and the basic taxes have increased, so that many of the African inhabitants have finally had to give up this financial pressure and move to the edge of the city in which the new ghettoes are built.
